Going out on the water is a fun experience for the whole family, even your pets! However, it is very important to take special precautions when bringing your dog along for the ride. They may need to learn how to swim first, or they might need to practice getting on and off the boat. You will also need to pack gear especially for your pet. Here’s what you need to remember:
Supplies
Contrary to popular belief, not all dogs are great swimmers. Even if they are, there is the risk of your dog becoming tired while swimming or the water being too rough for them to handle. Pack a life jacket made for dogs; it should have lifting handles that allow you to pick them up out of the water. Make sure the jacket fits your dog nicely before purchasing. You should also bring along clean water as waterborne parasites can make your dog sick. Sunscreen is another essential for light-colored and/or thin-haired dogs. Use baby sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher on their ears, the bridge of their nose, and any other area where skin shows. Never use sunscreen with zinc oxide on your dog.
While In Motion
When the boat is in motion, make sure your pet is not standing on the bow of the boat, as they face the risk of losing their balance in the event of a large wave or sudden change in speed or direction. Do not let them ride on the stern of the boat while it is motion, either. The best spot for your pet to enjoy the ride is lying down beside you or on the floor of the boat. It may be smart to keep their leash on in case you need to have control of their movement.
Water Safety
Some dogs are natural swimmers, but others need a bit more coaching. It is recommended to start your new swimmer in a shallow area where you can walk beside them while leashed. If your pup seems apprehensive of the water, bring along a toy that you can toss in the water and entice them to retrieve it. When teaching your dog to swim with all four legs, hold them up until they can doggie paddle. There are also flotation devices made for dogs that allow them to float on top of the water. Never throw the dog in if they are not experienced with swimming, and never leave them alone in the water.
