How to Choose the Correct Type of Boat Lift Motor

Here at Boat Lift Warehouse, we offer a variety of boat lift motors that are sure to meet your needs. We carry four basic types of boat lift motors: the Footed Motor, C-Face Motor, Blower Motor/Floating Boat Lift Motor, and the Free Standing Boat Lift Motor. Let’s explore the application of each of these motors so that you can find the best fit for your lift.

Footed Motor

Footed boat lift motors are used for lifts that have a hoist that uses a belt and pulley to connect the motor to the hoist. These motors are available with horsepower ratings which include ¾ hp, 1hp, and 1.5hp. All three of these ratings come in the 56-frame size. The ¾ horsepower also comes in a 48-frame size that is used on PWC lifts.

Other options for footed boat lift motors are painted and stainless steel outer castings; however, some manufacturers actually combine the two and make a combo motor that has a stainless steel center casing with the ends painted. These combo-footed motors have an advantage because they have better resistance to the elements, especially in coastal areas where the salt water and air make the painted motor rust. These motors are available in 120v and 240v, and Boat Lift Warehouse is one of the few places that offer footed motors in DC voltage as well.

C-Face Motor

The C-Face boat lift motor mounts differently than the other motors. It mounts to a direct drive hoist using bolt holes on the face of the motor. The drive shaft of the C-Face motor goes directly into the gearbox of the direct drive hoist (it doesn’t use a belt or pulley to operate). These motors are available with horsepower ratings which include ¾ hp, 1hp, 1.5hp, and 2hp. Other options for C-Face motors are they can be painted, stainless steel, or a combination of both. Some manufacturers can even make a C-Face motor that is also a footed motor, so this type of motor will work on both applications.

Blower Motors/Floating Boat Lift Motors

These motors work with Floating Boat Lifts and have a very basic concept. They are able to move air in or out to allow the lift to raise or lower your boat. However, it is important to keep in mind that blower motors/floating boat lift motors are only available in 120 volts.

Free Standing Boat Lift Motors

These motors have low horsepower and attach to the same winch that comes with freestanding lifts, such as ShoreMaster, Hewett, Shore Station, and Craftlander, just to name a few. Freestanding boat lift motors just replace the hand crank wheel on the lifts listed above.

We call these motors free standing to give them an identity because the industry does not have a name that is commonly used to refer to these motors. In fact, the term boat lift motor is so generic in the industry and online that many lift owners have trouble knowing what to ask for.

With a wide variety of boat lift motors, we are sure that we have the perfect boat lift motor for you. If you have any questions or concerns regarding which boat lift motor you need, don’t hesitate to contact the pros at Boat Lift Warehouse. See you on the water!
