How to Measure for a Boat Cover

Categories: Boating

Winter is coming, which means it’s time to start thinking about protecting your boat from the snow and cold. One of the best ways to do that is with a boat cover. But before you can buy a cover, you need to take some measurements. Understanding how to measure for a boat cover can help ensure a perfect fit, no matter the size of your watercraft.

Measuring Your Boat

Step 1: Measure the length of your boat. This is the easiest measurement to take. Simply measure from the tip of the bow to the back of the stern (where the engine is). This will help ensure that your boat tarp will reach from one end of the boat to the other.

Step 2: Measure the beam width of your boat for your new small boat cover. This is the width of your boat at its widest point. To get an accurate measurement, take a tape measure and place one end at the port (left) side of the boat just behind the bow. Then stretch the tape measure across to the starboard (right) side of the boatĀ just behind the stern. The number that lines up with where you started on the port side is your beam width measurement.

Step 3: Measure for height clearance. This will come in handy when choosing a cover with an integrated frame or when selecting a mooring cover that goes all the way to the ground rather than a regular boat tarp. To measure for height clearance, start by measuring from the top of the stern (where the engine is) straight up to see how tall your boat is at its tallest point. Next, measure from deck level at mid-ship out to each side to see how wide your boat is at its tallest point. Keep in mind that you’ll need height clearance for any objects that are permanently affixed to your boat, like antennas, air conditioners, etc.
