Must-Have Boating Safety Equipment

Regardless of what you use your boat for, whether it be for fishing, wakeboarding, or just cruising, you should always have safety gear on board. The U.S. Coast Guard does require different items for different types and sizes of vessels, but here are some of the basics to keep you and your boating passengers safe on the water:

Life Jackets/Personal Flotation Devices

A wearable Personal Flotation Device (PFD) must be available for each person on board. If a person is water skiing or wakeboarding behind the boat, they must have a PFD as well. Children age 12 and under must always wear a PFD on a moving boat. Anyone riding a personal watercraft must also wear a PFD at all times. It is recommended for everyone onboard to put on their life jackets before departure, but if not, it should be the first thing done in the event of an emergency.

Throwable Flotation Devices

At least one throwable floating device, a Type IV PFD, is necessary to have on your boat in addition to life jackets. Only one is required, but it is always better to have more than one on hand, whether it be a ring buoy, cushion, or other device.

Visual Signaling Device

There are different requirements for visual distress signals by size of vessel and the state in which you are boating. Boats under 16 feet must have flares or nighttime signals, while boats over 16 feet must have visual signals for both day and night. Flares such as aerial light flares, a strobe light, or orange/white smoke are acceptable, while flags may be used during the daytime.

Sound Signaling Devices

Sounds are especially helpful in foggy conditions and are useful during both day and night. Large vessels, such as those over 39 feet, should use a bell to sound at regular intervals in times of limited visibility. Horns and whistles can be used for all boats.

Fire Extinguishers

Boats under 26 feet, including personal watercrafts, need at least one B-1 type extinguisher. Boats 26 to under 40 feet need two B-1 types or one B-2 type extinguisher. To operate an extinguisher, pull the pin, squeeze the handle, and aim it at the base of the flames. Discuss this with your family and guests so they will be prepared in case of emergency.
